¡¡¡¡Situated by the Lijiang River in Guilin, Lijiang Publishing House
is a provincial-level publisher of Chinese and foreign literature,
tourist and cultural books. Since its establishment in 1980, Lijiang
Publishing House had served as a subtitle of Guangxi People¡¯s Publishing
House until 1985, when it was moved to Guilin and became a separate
entity.
¡¡¡¡Over the past 21 years, the Publishing House has produced 2,860
titles. It first established its presence in China¡¯s publishing
sector with world literature publications. It then arrested public
attention by art works. Its success continued as it moved into publishing
Chinese literature.
¡¡¡¡Its successes include Nobel Literature Laureates series, Foreign
Literary Classics series, Twentieth Century French Literature series,
Foreign Human Body Art series, Pearl Buck collection, A Complete
Guide to Chinese and Foreign Prose Poems, The Danzig Trilogy, Collection
of the Year series, Romance of the Guangxi Warlords, Taiping Heavenly
Kingdom, The Account of Jindou, Heaven and Earth, Les Fleurs du
Mal, Liu Yong and Liu Xuan series, How the Steel was Tempered, The
Gadfly, and the series of Contemporary Guangxi Ethnic Minority Writers.
¡¡¡¡The Publishing House has published an array of national award-winning
books, such as Reader¡¯s Guide to ¡°Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio¡±
(nomination for the National Publication Award); The Ocean of Poetry,
A Million of Why¡¯s in Social Sciences and A Dictionary of China¡¯s
Cultural and Historical Relics (all First Prize winners of China
Publication Award); Men of Maize, Yasunari Kawabata collection and
Higashiyama Kaii collection (all First Prize winners of the National
Award for the Best Foreign Literature Publications). There are also
a large number of titles winning the Best Guangxi-Published Books
Award of Guangxi People¡¯s Government and other provincial/ministerial-level
awards.
¡¡¡¡For its outstanding achievements in the publishing field, Lijiang
Publishing House was awarded a ¡°National Good Publisher¡± merit by
the State Press and Publication Administration in 2000. It is also
a ¡°National Model in International Copyright Trade¡±.
¡¡¡¡Since China became a member state of Berne Convention and the
Universal Copyright Convention, the Publishing House has scored
remarkable progress in co-publishing programs with foreign counterparts.
It has obtained more than 200 licenses from foreign publishers,
the total release exceeding 4,000,000 copies. Lijiang Publishing
House has established copyright trading relationship with over 30
countries and regions in the world. It has the right to publish
in Chinese language some world-famous writers such as Gunter Grass,
Marguerite Duras, Thomas Mann and Ethel Lilian Voynich. The Publishing
House has also exported licenses of more than 100 books.
